Library Lullabye

Fallen asleep in the chair, big hoodie, small blue book, completely out, slumped over, dead. Crooned to sleep by the soft sounds of the library, padding feet, creaking chairs, muffled voices, the hum of the road outside and the beep of the crosswalk. Fingers tapping, light click, check-in, check-out, pages turning, the clunk and slide of books being shelved, black and white ink on yellowing musty dusty pages...this is his lullabye.
6/18/08

I wrote it on a piece of scrap note card. He came in around opening stashing his skateboard and orange Poweraid beneath a table in plain sight of the circ desk. He got on the computers for a minute and then I saw him passed out, melting in to a comfy chair as I shelved paperback books by him, his legs out in front of him firmly securing himself in position with the weight of his skater shoes on the floor.
He was still passed out by the time I left, roughly three hours later.

I like people watching. I think I'm going to try and make it an excerize for myself at work, to write these little portraits of people.
