The Visit

The Visit went well. Very well. Much better than I'd expected, given that I was a nervous wreck before they got here...

An online friend, and now a "real live" friend, Susan H., came to visit us for the first time ever last night. She lives in Eugene, Oregon and was here for a couple of weeks to visit family and see some sights and just have a holiday for herself. We had met within the last month or so and it was because of our mutual friend Emily, who passed last February, that we even met at all.

Susan and Em had been pen-friends online for many, many years, just as Emily and I had been. When Em passed last February, Susan didn't know what had happened, and I found a note in my blog from her wondering about Emily. I wrote to her and we've not stopped writing yet. So when she mentioned that she had a trip to the East Coast planned for August, we agreed she'd come here for some lobster.

And that is what transpired last night.

I have to admit that I did not take any photos. I thought about it, but I didn't do it. I think the main reason is because I didn't want MY picture taken so I just let the matter lie. So sorry, no photos... maybe next time when Susan comes back this way again.

We cooked up a potful of lovely lobsters freshly caught by Paul The Lobsterman that day. I cleaned most of them (took the meat out) but left 3 big whole lobsters for Susan, her niece Ruth, and Ruth's son Liam (if he wanted one, which he didn't!) to pick apart at their leisure. This is the way the Honthumb family eats their lobsters, apparently... it's the way my mother used to do it, but Paul and I prefer to just take out the tail (and claw if there are any claws) meat and eat it neatly... we always discard the bodies and legs...

We sent Susan and Ruth back with a big bag of bodies so they could suck out all the lovely leg meats!

After the initial introductions, we sat right down to supper. I'd made a large pasta salad and a batch of deviled eggs. That was enough. Susan and Ruth picked apart every morsel of sweet lobster meat in their lobsters. We talked and laughed, and laughed and talked, and got to know one another as the evening went on.

Then we retired to the Reading Room where I found 2 books Susan liked and I gave them to her to take home. Then we decided we'd all go into the living room and put on the Red Sox game on TV and just watch "one inning" together. Pretty soon it got to be nearing 9 o'clock pm and I learned that they had to drive from Salem all the way out to North Brookfield, MA to get home! So we packed them up with lots of lobster bodies and home made peanut butter/banana cookies and off they went into the night.

A good time was had by all... I can safely say it was perfect!

Thanks Susan, Ruth and Liam for coming to visit us. We will never forget last night.

Love,

Bex & Co.
