bike riding

I'm sure there is an entry earlier crowing about David learning to ride a bike, and then, perhaps, one a year later, bemoaning David's fear of biking. Except for a brief sojourn with our friendly bike guru Darrell, David has not been interested in trying to ride a bike, culminating in a miserable experience at a bike shop last spring break when Rose and I were just getting our tires pumped. When we bought Rose a new bike last summer, David refused to get one.

As of two days ago, David has a new bike, has ridden it around the neighborhood several times, and took a long ride to the park.

How did this happen? School. I give school complete and total credit. They had a bike unit. The first day out David said he was very wobbly, and he couldn't balance at all. The next day David said he got the hang of it, and it was really easy. After that, he could not wait to get biking. Against his wishes, we had kept Rose's bike that was his size, and he and I went around the neighborhood and took a trip to Fred Meyer. Then he and John went bike shopping, and the new bike is being put through its paces. He still sometimes forgets he has hand breaks, and sometimes gets too close to the street for my comfort. One time he fell trying to use his hand signals, but basically, he's got it.
