I'm a web developer for NOVICA. I'm fascinated by languages, even though I only speak English and a little Spanish. I can count in Korean and have numerous language and linguistics books. I'm living within walking distance of CSUN where I share an apartment with my girlfriend and 2 cats. I'm happy. I write sporadically (I really need to finish that short story), with every intention of making a living at it at an undisclosed point in the future. I taught physics at Emperor's College Winter Term 2008. I love games and stories and music and computers and science and "and." I drink my coffee 100% black 80% of the time and 80% black 20% of the time. Also, there are other things. 7332 42

Playing the White Stones

The Setting

On Wedensday nights at the Unurban, two things occur at once, kind of like the black and white stones of go. In the back of the coffee shop the Santa Monica Go Club meets. In the front, there is the Really Big Show, basically an open mic thingy.

The Idea

For some reason I was drawn to babelfish yesterday. You may have heard the joke that when you translate "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" into Rusian, you get "The vodka was good but the meat was bad." Well similar hilarity ensues when you use babelfish to translate a piece of text from english to another language and back again. I did this, and then thought, This might be a thing to do for the Really Big Show...

The Execution

I chose a rather emotional email I'd been sent a few years ago. I introduced it using the phrase "I Love You" as an example of what I was doing. Try translating that to Korean and back, and you'll get "Me it will be extensive and it loves." Examples of the passage I read:
But, now with being revealed, i hour and it passes innecessity to be like that it goes out and when from you seeing a e-mail every, the sense of indignation does not rise the inside my mind.
and the ending:
You under respecting, multi being Dob 1 possibility me it hopes my demand. Thanks.....
That was fun, and I got in a couple good go games. At one point in the evening there were five games going on which was the most I've seen outside of the tournament since I started. That was cool.
