Dispatches from the City of Angels

I'm a writer and humorist living in and writing about Los Angeles. You can catch my novel LOSING CLEMENTINE out March 6 from William Morrow. In the meantime, feel free to poke around. Over at my website you can find even more blog entries than I could fit here, as well as a few other ramblings. Enjoy and come back often.

Up in 'Frisco

At least once a year, I hop the cheapest flight I can get and leave behind the Botox and the boobs for the rarefied air of San Francisco. I ditch my car and hop a bus with the tweakers and the homeless guys. Wave goodbye to my teetotaller husband and rack up a bar bill. Trade the San Fernando Valley for the hills, the sun for the fog, the sprawl for the compact and vertical. It's good for me, a cultural colonic.

Most importantly, I crash with my best girlfriend, laugh my ass off and remember why she's the Laverne to my Shirley. Occasionally, we even do something respectable.

Everybody needs a Laverne. Love ya, babe.
