According to the AP:

The chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court said Thursday he will not remove a Ten Commandments monument from the state judicial building, defying a federal court order to remove the granite monument.

The article also informs us that:

Several religious groups have scheduled a rally on the Capitol steps for Saturday to protest Thompson's decision. Organizers have said they expect thousands to come to Montgomery from across the country for the rally. Religious groups have also said Christians would kneel in prayer in front of the monument if there is an attempt by Thompson to have it removed.

Now, the damn thing weighs about 5,400 lbs., I believe. So my solution is not to move it. I say, just sand it down and stick a statue of a famous Alabamian on top. Here's a prospective list:

Hank Aaron
Nat “King” Cole
Emmy Lou Harris
Kate Jackson
Coretta Scott King
Harper Lee
Carl Lewis
Joe Louis
Willie Mays
Jim Nabors
Jesse Owens
Rosa Parks
Hank Williams

My personal vote would go for Gomer Pyle, but heck, pick your favorite and write the Alabama legislature.
