Tied, But Not Really

There are lots of headlines for stories today talking about new polls, and how Kerry and Bush are "tied", "neck in neck", or as this one put it "dead even".

Well, as I pointed out in an earlier post, no, they're not. Even as the popular vote (psst, we don't count this) fluctuates and sometimes narrows, Bush's electoral vote lead only gets wider and wider, at least according to Slate's tally:

As of today, October 4th, 2004

Bush: 348 votes (solid + close)
Kerry: 190 votes (solid + close)

Of course it would be more interesting if it were close, but at this point it doesn't appear that way.
