I started reading at Cafe Espresso Roma in January of 1992. I had read once before on a poetry night and did tried stand up comedy a few times in 91 but failed miserably. At Roma there were a number of really nice people who read every Thursday including Deborah Kohen, Penina Finger, Dayvid Figler, John Emmons, Charles Alvarez, Deana Rash, Joe Parolini, Dave Anson, Donald Rilea, Rene Christy, Keith Haubrich, William Vose, and Julie Cohn; just to name a few. The host was John Emmons, a middle aged artist who had extended his talents to many areas. Often he'd start the readings with the line "It's Thursday Night, It's dark, it's 8 o Clock, It must be poetry alive." He'd read for 10-20 minutes and then he'd announce the next poet. Readings would frequently go for 2-3 hours. John and the poets were pretty active getting poets on the college radio station, at political rallies, even a community access tv show. The poets were covered in the local alt weekly which was a small tabloid called In Music. It preceded Scope Magazine by about a year.
