I see a trend towards trying to swing academia to the right. Many children grow up watching Fox News, and they don't question or think critically. I am not suggesting that they become liberals to satisfy me, I would just like them to think a bit deeper. Why is god so necessary to us? Prove that our nation's founders wanted a religiously conservative society. Dig deeper. Convince me. Fox News and that way of thinking is a cop out. So are liberal sheep. People who just go along with the left because they are in agreement on one or two issues. People that are blinded by marijuana are just as screwed up as the people who are blinded by fundamentalism. Everything can not be reduced to a black or white issue. Stop throwing Pat Robertson at me and give me some Robert Novak, or William Buckley, or investigate the libertarians. I am going to switch the format around of my course, and focus on skills and structure next term. I will follow the chapters and then move towards critical thinking. -I will have them investigate Websites. Skepdic.org the Onion and a few others in that ball park and investigate the symbology of the United States. Perhaps we will read some Franklin, Jefferson and other early American writers. Perhaps a focus on oratory and intellectualism such as the works of Lincoln, Washington, Madison, Adams, Rousseau. I am not sure if any of them were exposed to such writings in grade school other than a few select quotes. |
