Both preliminary essays are graded on a scale of one to ten

A good example of a 10 would be the Jenny Benson essay on censorship in chapter 9.

The Scout is a Bigot would get an 8, and the essay on FGM would get an 8

A nine is an essay that had a few technical errors, or minor flaws but is otherwise great.

an 8 is a very good essay with several flaws
a 7 is a good essay with numerous flaws
a 6 is a fair essay with numerous flaws and problems addressing assignment and staying on topic
a 5 or lower indicates major problems with addressing assignment, length, subject, use of and citation of sources, and/or language problems so severe that it falls short of basic college level standards and indicates either lack of prerequisites, or need for remedial help, or lack of effort..

Late papers will be penalized fifty percent of the grade. A late paper can only be revised up to a 5 That means it is better to hand it in ontime and take a low grade than hand it in late as you can still improve on a paper handed in on time.

Grading Warning: Just because you can revise doesn’t mean you should lag on papers initially. For me to change a grade significantly at the end of the semester will be because of outstanding improvement. In otherwords, if you get a 4 on an essay because you handed it in with lots of inadequacies, you shouldn’t expect more than a 6 or 7, after rigorous revision.

30: 3 papers- 2 formal/ one prospectus and annotated bibliography
30 on research project. (20 on paper, 10 on presentation)
10 on midterm.
20 on quizzes and other inclass writings
5 on Grammer/ Style presentation.
5 on completion of both library quizzes.

Note: I will only waive a pop quiz grade for university, medical, or religious excused absences.

Expect at least one quiz a week.

I will grade most quizzes on points and half points.

I may ask an essay question and a good answer will get 1 point. A fair answer will get 1/2 point. Non attendance or lateness will mean an automatic zero.
