attendance philosophy and rules

Attendance is a very important part of this course. Your grade depends on it. Why is it so important? It is likely that you will miss out on group work, quizzes, special announcements, class discussion, and due dates. It is also required by the department. So 5 absences is allotted as the maximum.
Save them for when you are sick, or have a family emergency, car trouble, etc...

Tardiness, or partial absenteeism is also distracting and anyone coming in late or leaving early, will be marked half absent. No make up quizzes or iCW for late students or students leaving class early or for extended periods of time.

____

Extra Credit

ten points each: Go to a poetry reading that I am at.
Write a 3 page paper summarizing the reading and responding to the content of the poetry, and performance.

Attendance Make Up

This option is for those in excess of total absences and will be difficult and proportional (nor does this guarantee a passing/higher grade). It will involve essay exams done directly in my office during office hours or appt.

HOW TO GET AN A or B IN THIS CLASS:

Don't miss any class
Have all papers in on time
do the revision and follow directions
Study!
Do the extra credit

Go to the Writing Center often!

How to get a C in this class: Don't do the revisions, just put the original versions in the portfolio
Miss 6 or 7 classes. Turn in shorter papers.

How to get a D:

Leave early a few times. Walking out of class is a sure way to show disrespect for a teacher

Miss 8 or 9 classes, show up late frequently, don't revise your papers, turn in shoddy work and sleep in class.

How to get an F in this Class:

Miss lots of classes.
Turn in papers late frequently
turn in unacceptable papers, and when I give them back to you, don't turn them in.
Don't hand in your final portfolio
Miss the final exam.
stop coming to class and neglect to drop

If you notice, your grade depends on your behavior and your results. This class is all about process... so you must fully participate in the writing process. Writer's Block does not count!

Your paper is late if it is not in my possession at the end of the class period due.

You are late the second I take role and are not there. If you are ten minutes late, you are half absent, if you are 20 minutes late, you are absent.

If you walk in after I give a quiz, you are given a zero for that quiz. If you miss an INCLASS WRITING, youare given a zero for that ICW. If your Formal Essay Assignment is to be based on a specific ICW and you are not absent the day of that ICW, I will assign the subject for you to cover for that essay.

Medical(Doctor), Religious, University related excuses must be documented and done in advance, except for extreme medical emergencies.

I will allow make up work for those who missed with acceptable documentation.

Those missing for personal reasons or any reasons not documented or acceptable(Car breaking down, death in the family, etc...) will not be allowed to make up the quizzes or ICW, but should consider the Extra Credit Poetry Readings as a way to not lose too many points

Quizzes and ICWs. Once I collect them, they are done.

They are not graded for quality, although I will evaluate them as much as possible. It is a either/or system of grading. You did it, you got it into me when I collected them... I give you credit. You come in late or miss class that day, or you don't turn it in when I collect it... you get a zero for that quiz or ICW. At the end of the semester I tally the points up and give a grade based on the percentage. So absenteeism (unexcused) will affect the grade negatively.

In otherwords; You only have/get to be here for 50 minutes each day... Don't miss any of it!

What can I do to insure an A in this class?

Nothing! Do all the work I require. Don't miss class!

What happens if I am really sick, but I don't have a doctor?
Go to Student Health Center... they don't officially excuse, but I will accept their letters, as long as you have them indicate each day you were in dispose.

Note: Accepted Excuses must be documented and in my possession. I need a photocopy for my records, before I can accept your excuses. Although your parents may love you, a note from your dad or mom doesn't count!

ARE WE CLEAR!

Q: I was an A student in high school, how come you gave me a D?

Look at the point rubric. Also, keep in mind that we are in college. I am not here to weed you out, but the standards are higher here, and different.

Q: I need more feedback, I didn't get enough on my paper.

A: That's not a question, but, hopefully you will understand why you got the grade you got after our conference. If you need more feedback, I will direct you to the writing center where a fellow instructor and grad asst. or volunteer will go over your paper with you and help you with any deficiencies.

NOTE: They won't fix your paper for you... rather, they help you with a problem area or two. They will help you in far better ways than you imagine.

Q: I know I have to miss on the day you are showing a film in class, how can I make it up?

A: either I will put it on reserve at the Lied Library for you, or let you borrow the video. Or give you an alternate assignment... IF YOU LET ME KNOW 2 weeks in advance

What if you know you are going to miss a due date for a formal paper?

A: Turn it in early!
