In the book A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, all the main character believes all the event in his life are meant to lead up to one defining moment in life.

I can't imagine a more horrifying idea.

One moment? Just one, and that's it?

How awful.

How wretched the thought that you've got your one moment, and that's it.

I actually think that's worse than believing there's not really any major moment in your life.

I'm not sure what made that pop into my head. I read the book 15 years ago, and disliked it immensely.
