2008 Books #55 Flora Segunda

Very, very good. Recommended. If you're interested in YA literature in the least bit, go out and read this now.

Ysabeau Wilce, how I loathe you, how I envy you, how I wish I could write like you!

Flora Segunda is about a girl from a prominent house in some weird, future California that involves magic. (Maybe not a weird future California, maybe just an alternate one with Spanish and Aztec invaders, but they're not the point)

Except her mother doesn't approve of magic, and so Flora is forced to do all kinds of chores the houses usually take care of with magic. And she doesn't like it. So she gets IN TROUBLE.

I like this series for its whimsy, its ability to address love, duty to one's family, and emerging from family tradition, and the wonderful voice of Flora.

excellent, work.
