Mary Pearson is not a speculative fiction writer.

But The Adoration of Jenna Fox is undoubtedly speculative fiction.

It takes a current scientific trend and extends it to a possible future in an utterly believable way. (to tell you more specifically what science would be to ruin the story)

And this is fantastic fiction at its best. This is the kind of fiction, like Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, or The Book Thief, or The Handmaid's Tale, or Daughters of the North, or the Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, that doesn't use people to explore a fantastic idea, but USES THE FANTASTIC TO EXPLORE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN.

And Mary Pearson suceeds at this in a YA way writing a totally believable (to 36 year old me) teenage girl afloat in a sea of identity crisis and non-understanding of how to love or be loved by her family.

Bravo. Highly Recommended.
