The Hunger Games Series
She was a bit disturbed by the death in the first book, but surprisingly for me, had very little to say about all the (for me) depressing death and results in the third of the series.

The Cupcake Diaries by Coco Simon
This is a series of slim novels each featuring one of a group of middle school girls who have started a cupcake business. These are entertaining books with suitable for age 8 and up (no tricky themes or inappropriateness) mostly focused on friends and family problems.

My Life in Pink and Green by Lisa Greenwald
This cute story is about a 12 year old who tries to save the family pharmacy by coming up with lotions and face masks. I often find girl1 rereading this one when she's got ten or twenty minutes to spare.

Although she resists all fantasy but the Potter, recently she's told me she wants to read some of the other "future dystopia" books (in the same vein as hunger games) such as Matched by Ally Condie and Divergent by Veronica Roth
