PERRINE'S SOUND AND SENSE, a textbook about poetry that contains lots of poems and interesting, enlightening, and only occasionally stuffy discussion.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
Not that I can think of... certainly not since adolescence. It probably would have been some sensitive type, rejected by the domineering society of pretty girls, whose pluck and intelligence gave her a spark they could never know. The artistic outsider whose conviction and courage propels her beyond her comfort zones, beyond her friends and family, beyond everything she knows, in a heartfelt search for her truth, her passion--her destiny!
The last book you bought was...?
WRITING THE BREAKOUT NOVEL, Donald Maass
I have mixed feelings about this book. It's mostly the same advice I've seen in WRITING ANY OLD DAMN NOVEL, only this time we really mean it. It's also got a bit much of a by-the-numbers approach for my taste--but on the third hand, it also got me thinking about aspects of what I'm working on, with productive results. Whether that's because the book is as advertised or I'm just ready to be reminded of a few things, I dunno.
