Let the carbo-loading begin

A few weeks ago, after the Harlem Valley Rail Ride (a 77-mile day, including getting to and from), I commented "After this ride, I think I could do a century, though not a hilly one."

So I went googling, and found the Flat As A Pancake Century Ride, but it's in Illinois. So I went googling some more and found the Montauk Century, but it's in May. I joined that club anyway, just because they have a goofy sense of humor. But then I found the North Fork Century, which is this Sunday on Long Island, and I signed up.

Headline: 40-YEAR-OLD MAN WITH MS PAYS ACTUAL MONEY TO RIDE A BIKE 100 MILES

The way they've organized it, you can decide to do one of the shorter options while you're midway through the route. (The 66-mile route is called a "metric century" instead of "the shorter one for wusses.") So I'll be keeping that in mind.

Because of transient MS stuff, I haven't been sure I was going to do it. But I took pretty good care of myself this week, hydrated a lot, ate right, got the bike fixed again, and here we go. So today I'm starting the 3-day carbo-load, which began a few minutes ago with one of my favorite New York meals: Irish Breakfast--including the potatoes!

I never get to eat the potatoes.

If my Harlem Valley Rail Ride experience was typical, I'll feel foggy and blech starting tomorrow, but my muscles will last all day on Sunday.
