Maybe "finance" isn't the right word, but I shan't be dissuaded.

When making your monthly budget, always round up your monthly expenses. This achieves two things. A) It makes sure you always have enough money to pay your bills and B) It turns paying bills into a time to make money.

How does this work?

Allow me to demonstrate.

At my old apartment, the only bill I had to pay was electricity. I budgeted $60 a month to pay this bill. I figured that at my highest electricity usage my bill would be around 55 dollars or so.

So the 60 dollars a month that I budgeted was already higher than I estimated my top bill to be. It was a built in expense. I knew that every month, 60 dollars would go to that bill. It was money I didn't even imagine was mine to spend on other things.

So imagine my glee every month when I would get my energy bill and find it to be less (sometimes significantly so) than I had budgeted. Sometimes my bill was $28, sometimes it was $17, one time it was $9. The bottom line being, it never was how much I budgeted. Not even close.

Getting my bill was in essence getting "free money" in the mail.

Hence, the freegan prospers.
