You all have no idea how many Directors lists I already have made. I'll probably post about one a day or so. Thought today, I'd hit another heavyweight director. One thing I forgot to do yesterday, was to give a little summary for the director as well. I'm including that today.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Stanley Kubrick - I don't think there's such a thing as a bad Kubrick film. I mean, if we're putting grades on this list, then the first movie is an A+ and the last movie is B+. I think he's probably the "greatest director as artist" that there's ever been.

A Clockwork Orange - This movie is about 20 years ahead of its time. It's a very intense and surreal movie, with some of the strangest dialogue ever spoken in a film. It's also the strangest love letter to Beethoven that's ever been written.

2001: A Space Odyssey - Beautifully shot (as all his movies are) and a total mindf*ck. The book is better, but this movie really expanded my horizons as to what else could be out there. If Lucas makes the Universe small, Kubrick expands it infinitely. It also gave a road map to getting to god (omnipresent aliens) which reads as follows: find black Monolith in space, ride through the kaleidoscopic acid trip, talk to the old man in the white room, turn into a fetus floating above earth.

Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Peter Sellers in three different roles. That's really all I have to say. But I'll continue: "There's no fighting in the war room." Convinced?

The Shining - This and "The Exorcist" jockey for "all-time scariest movie" honors. I like how everything feels claustrophobic, yet expansive (through the wide screen lense) at the same time. The only weak point is Shelley Duvall. Her voice is more terrifying than parts of the movie. This is one of the few horror movies that uses creepy children to great effect. These hack horror movie director need to go back to the source material to see how it was done correctly.

Full Metal Jacket - As a former Marine, I can vouch for the authenticity of the first half of this movie. The first half of this movie is so brilliant, that the second half almost pales in comparison. My twin Matthew Modine is pretty good in the movie, although it's Vincent D'Onofrio and R. Lee Ermey who COMPLETELY steal the show. Me love this movie long time.

Barry Lyndon - This is what an animated painting would look like. It's a beautifully shot movie. Ryan O'Neal's accent comes and goes, but his overall performance is pretty darn good. That duel scene at the end is Kubrick at his best.

Spartacus - Can't beat a movie that shows off the Kirk Douglas dimpled chin as much as this movie does. Even though the studio messed with this movie, this remains one of the all-time great epics, and contains the all-time great oysters and clams reference.

Eyes Wide Shut - I couldn't really get into this movie. I've tried multiple times, but it's too inaccessable. It's beautifully shot (surprise, surprise), but...yeah...
