Art Markets Survey

While I'm not one for making New Year's resolutions, I'd like to attempt to make a more directed push this year to find more creative work. In the past I've been content to let art jobs come to me, waiting for others to write books and then ask me to contribute cover art.

Well, Mike Jasper and Mike Bishop are right, I probably should look into finding new markets to which I could submit my work for publication. Right now, at least, I'd like to start contacting some of the folks for whom I've already supplied cover artwork (Golden Gryphon, PS Publishing, ElectricStory.com) and solicit assignments for upcoming books.

But, after those inquiries, it would be nice to approach other publishers, small-presses, magazines, etc., which are new to me but might still be interested in my digital illustrations.

This leads me to pose the question to anyone out there who might know or have experience with a wide range of suitable publishers and have some familiarity with my visual style (but not a must): To which markets can I submit artwork and, if possible, expect appropriate financial compensation?

So far, this is my very short list. Asterisks indicate quality of payment:

Golden Gryphon, ****
ElectricStory.com, ***
PS Publishing, **
PrimeBooks, *
(if there were a half asterisk, Prime would get one.)

And, here, the list from the gentle reader:

NFG, ???
Strange Horizons, ???
Shocklines (forums)
Night Shade Books, ???
Subterranean Press, ???

In any event, please help me add to this list, and don't worry if you have no clue as to quality of pay. That, I can figure out, and hopefully I'll be able to add to this list gradually as I go. Oh, and this doesn't have to be just for cover art. I'd certainly be interested in any "interior illustration" -- color and/or B/W -- as well.

Thanks, everyone!

And finally, this is a preemptive apology to Jason Lundberg, who was nice enough to send me a short list of such markets about a year and a half ago in an email -- which, unfortunately, has ended up verloren somewhere in the ether,
