2006-09-08 9:44 AM and so it goes in the mainline First Friday of May, 2006 --
I receive my electronic copy of the Crankypants News Monthly, which contains articles written by members of the presbytery. The articles are written by two women and three men, all middle aged or older and white. One article is written by a retired minister, entitled "If I were twenty years old I would notice that...", followed by a series of perceptive one-liners about the state of the world. The Following Week -- I e-mail the editor of the News and say, in a very nice way, I assure you, "Here's a thought. Why not have an *actual* twenty-year-old write for the Monthly?" Editor's response: "Do you know any?" My response: "Well, I'm 34, that's getting closer." Editor: "Great. I'm set on regular writers, but would you like to write book reviews from time to time?" Me: "Yes, I think I could take on something, perhaps quarterly? Let's talk." August, 2006 -- Me to editor: "When does the Monthly resume its schedule for the fall? I'm still interested." Editor: "Yes, I remember e-mailing you. I have five book reviewers and their schedules have been set." Me to myself: Um, OK. ...What did I miss? September, 2006 -- The Monthly arrives. Three old white guys and a gal. And so it goes, as the mainline declines. Read/Post Comments (14) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
