me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Four cormorants

Last year I got all excited about the cormorant chick born down here on the lower Hudson. I wondered then if the parents would be able to find a nesting place for a second year, and whether cormorants hang around in a flock, or fly off when they get to be adults to find their own territories. Well, the answers are yes, yes and no. This year, we have three adults, one of whom I'm guessing is the baby from last year; and we have a new young one. You can tell from the feathers, which are brown on the babies and black on the adults. It took me until now to be sure, because it's hard to find them all hanging around together. But yesterday the three adults were sitting on pilings drying their wings in the breeze, and the baby was fishing right near them. I was ridiculously delighted to see them.
