me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

My man Will Smith

Not Bill, Will. Will Smith, whom I've admired as an actor and producer for twenty years, is from all the evidence a smart, compassionate man who said something undeniably true and he's getting all kinds of hell for it. Here's the story but if you don't want to go over there here's his remark:

"Even Hitler didn't wake up going, 'let me do the most evil thing I can do today.' I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good.' "

He obviously chose Hitler for his example because his point was everyone thinks they're the good guys, even the worst monsters. I'm astounded that anyone who can read to the end of a sentence could misinterpret this, and in fact I think the only way to do it would be deliberately, to make some trouble. Check out Keith Snyder's blog for a rant on (and link to) the JDL response. The JDL aspire to be to Judaism what Al Qaeda is to Islam. If the idiocy were confined to them it would be understandable but lots of idiots seem to have crawled out of the woodwork on this one. Poor Will, to have made that comment on a slow news day.

Peace on Earth.
