The Qianlong Emperor's shoe shop
Tuesday I went up to the Met to see three Qing dynasty shows focusing on the Qianlong Emperor. Three total knockout shows, I must say. This is from a long scroll recording an inspection visit the emperor made to the south. It's full of wonderful details like this, all about life in Suzhou. The emperor and his retinue (not seen here) are almost afterthoughts.
