me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Why don't seagulls starve?

I just had to ask, having watched a gull flying around for five minutes trying to find someplace to land and devour the tasty morsel he'd found without having it stolen from him by the gang of muggers flapping after him. Why is it an evolutionary advantage -- which it must be, or it wouldn't have developed -- for a dozen gulls to fly around for five minutes, thereby expended 60 gull-minutes worth of calories, when in the end only one gets to eat?
