me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Baby squirrel?

I don't know, but maybe. Hadn't seen any action near the nest for awhile now. Was wondering if maybe Squirrely and Squeeze didn't have a litter, and now have abandoned the warm winter nest for more air conditioned summer quarters. It's a little early for that, but the nest sure looked deserted. But: today I spotted a squirrel hanging out on the branch below the nest. That's a spot Squirrely likes, though I've never seen Squeeze there. This guy was lying on his belly in the sun, paws hanging down on each side, chin along the branch. But it didn't look like Squirrely. It was smaller, and piebald red and gray. If it was Squirrely, he's molting, which research tells me they do. But this winter having been so mild, there's no reason Squirrely should be that skinny. The other possibility is, it's a 6-7 week old, a new guy whose coat is just growing in and who's not old enough to have packed on a layer of chub. That would mean the litter would have to have come early, but from the way Squirrely and Squeeze were carrying on back in January, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that had happened. In any case, I watched the guy for about five minutes, after which he stretched, stood up, and scampered back up into the nest. If there are young babies in there Squeeze most likely wouldn't allow Squirrely inside. So either it was Squirrely and there are no babies; or this was a baby. Stay tuned!
