me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Singapore Day

Youse remember I charged off to Singapore last February to speak at a conference? Well, if youse don't remember, that's cool too. The short version is, I loved my trip there -- people, place, food! Well, it was Singapore Day yesterday here in NYC. This is an annual event put on by the Singaporean government. It shifts venues around Europe and the US, and it's not, like every other expo I've been to sponsored by a foreign country, for the purpose of promoting tourism. It's to remind overseas Singaporeans of all the great things at home -- the food, the celebrities, the job opportunities, the affordable housing, the bike paths, and the food -- and persuade them to come home. Singapore has lots of money but it also has a brain drain. Lots of reasons for that, but I'm feeling too benevolent to go into them right now, because even though I was a non-Singaporean gate crasher, I ate some fabulous chicken rice (oh that food!), saw the mambo jambo being done, and got to work a Singapore Police Force crime scene with Cheryl Tan and a Singaporean CID Inspector.
