me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Four squirrels!

Early this afternoon saw a squirrel sprawled on the branch below the nest. Got out the binocs (you knew I was a nerd, why are you surprised?) and saw he was a skinny, tired-looking fellow. Another squirrel came up the tree and sat near him, and another peeked out of the nest. Okay. The second squirrel dashed over and started grooming the first; then they both sat up and she ran down the tree and jumped to the next one. He followed more tentatively, hesitating before the big leap. The first one waited, then ran on. Squeeze and Squirt, I decided; she's showing Junior the ropes. Or, in this backyard, the vines and branches. Then I looked back at the nest, and there's a squirrel peering down where they went, a look of great consternation on his rodent face. He just keeps looking until he decides to hop out of the nest and sit on the branch. And then comes another one! Close inspection determined the second's an adult and the first, a juvenile. Squirrelly his own self, I'm thinking, and Squeak, which looked like what young one was thinking. Never fear; Squeeze returned in short order, gave Squeak a cheek-to-cheek rub, and ran off to the top of the tree with Squirt. They jumped to the next tree, and Squeak apparently decided anything big brother could do he could do. He chased after them. Squirrely watched for a few seconds and then turned and slipped back into the nest, probably to get some rest while the family was out.
