Shanghai pt. 3

I woke up Sunday morning around 9AM to find that my tutor Nancy went grocery shopping because she wanted to cook dinner that night. When she returned we headed downtown to look at some museums. The first place we went to was the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum. This showed the history of the growth and expansion of the city throughout the years and different country's influences on the city. There was also a lot of information about the Shanghai Expo starting next summer. Apparently the city is expecting around 70 million visitors next summer and there is construction going on throughout the city to prepare for it. Anyways, the museum just showed the buildings of Shanghai even though you could just look out the window and see them. Sound boring?...It was pretty boring. I don't think I'm much of a museum person. After the museum we had lunch. I was craving some good 'ol American food so naturally we went to McDonald's. I had a double cheeseburger, fries, and nuggets and it was about as good in America except they didn't serve BBQ sauce.

Next stop was the Shanghai Museum, a more traditional museum that had different artifacts describing the country's long and rich history. I liked the sculptures a lot. There were many intricate Buddha sculptures that were thousands of years old which I though were cool. There were also statues of warriors and dragons that I liked as well. The traditional Chinese paintings were alright, I liked the style of the paintings. I also found the jade sculptures very cool. Some were so detailed that a magnifying glass was put up to it so you could see it all. There was a china exhibit (like glassware) and also the furniture exhibit I found boring. The china looked like regular plates and dishes today and the furniture, although very intricate, didn't really do it for me. The museum gives you an insight into the history of the country and it was cool to see things so old. America's history is nothing compared to how long China's been around. Exhausted from so much walking around, we went home around 3PM. We took the subway back to where we were staying and as we exited, found it raining outside. I'm not sure if Chinese people don't like rain or something, but there were a huge group of people standing right in from of the exit refusing to leave. I was content leaving but my tutor said "no, let's wait 15 minutes for the rain to go away". Looking up at the sky I could see it was overcast and not going to stop, I also wanted to get home. I was insistent that the rain's not going to stop and better to leave now than later, eventually she bought and umbrella to walk home with and I was alright with getting wet.

Exhausted I went to my room to relax and next thing I know I'm waking up to my tutor saying that dinner was ready. It was nice to just go down and eat, but I kind of wanted to watch her cook to see how to make the dishes. She made beef, shrimp, and vegetables Chinese style. The meal was delicious although it was a bit tedious and messy peeling all the shrimp. My tutor said she had some friends to meet and left me. I was planning on meeting up with the friends I'd made the last night, but apparently the lady who ran the company dorms was not a big fan of my late night shenanigans. She said that company policy was be back by 11PM which meant it wasn't really worth going out for a short period. I was bummed, but instead I just walked around the area. I stopped at a cafe and ordered an iced coffee drink and a slice of cheesecake and headed home to watch Wimbledon all night.
