I'm a fan of Scott Mutter's "Surrational Images," a handful of which have become popular posterart fare. The American Museum of Photography has an online exhibit of his work, entitled somewhat misleadingly "A More Perfect World," that provides a broader experience of his latter-day symbolist expressions. They don't all work equally well, but my favorites are [Flag], [Eagle], and [Revolving Door]. Check it out.
