Hope you like the new fall colors of our blog! I drive historic Route 66 every day on the way back and forth to work- the landscape is a study in beiges lately: putty colored hills like sand dunes beside the road, trees tinted the hues of nutmeg and dried mustard. Even the highway, a seam that connects the patchwork of pastureland, has faded over the summer to a light gray wash. Though I hate fall- since I was little, Autumn brings with it a despair that lasts til April- I'm comforted by these colors while I drive, like a stew or a warm sweater.

I was thinking of my cousin Jill this morning while I drove, the sun shining through my windshield, not a soul on the road, Kirk Franklin's "Lovely Day" in the CD player- Jill's in South Florida, braving what must be a wild ride on her first day back at work since Wilma. The streetlights are out, and I can't imagine the mess of traffic. Her photographs show scenes not unlike the aftermath of a battle.

All's quiet here in my world.

I dodge tornadoes, Jill waits out hurricanes. It keeps our Grandma on her toes.
