'Zines, movies and bread pudding

It's Christmas Eve here in Illinois and there's not a speck of snow outside. Not that I'm complaining, mind you - I'd rather things stay clear at least until we get back from our New Year's trip to Michigan! We drove through some horrendous conditions on our last trip there around Thanksgiving and we aren't keen to repeat that experience.

Today I mostly spent reading and making a bread pudding for dessert tomorrow. I finished wrapping gifts yesterday, so everything is in place under the Christmas tree now. The bread pudding came out great, in case you were wondering (we just had to try some tonight!) :)

Last night we watched another of the DVDs we'd rented. This time it was Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. As expected, it was a bit of a departure from his usual suspense movies, but still impressive. While watching the making-of documentary on the DVD, I was stunned to learn of the number of effects shots used in the movie! Quite a few of these were obvious, like the overlaying of birds onto scenes, but there were some I just didn't catch. The plot wasn't anything flash and the acting was merely okay, but I still found it rather atmospheric.

Today I finished reading Say... aren't you dead? (Say..., issue #3). I recall this 'zine getting a good write-up in Locus, and for good reason. The artwork and layout are top-notch, and the quality of fiction is consistently good. Most of the stories stuck reasonably close to the theme for this issue, although a few seemed to have only a tenuous connection.

My favourite stories this issue were What We're Going to do Next by Jennifer Rachel Baumer, Season of the Beasts by Barth Anderson (this dark tale reads like something out of The Third Alternative), and That Which Does Not Kill Us by Scott Westerfeld (this one's also in Agog! Terrific Tales, which is buried somewhere in my vast "to-read" pile).

Time for me to go - we're going to Evening Mass soon. I hope everyone has a great day tomorrow (or today depending on where you live!), whatever your plans are. Carrie and I are just going to have a quiet day together, and we'll catch up with family when we visit Michigan.

ooOo Merry Christmas all! oOoo

What I'm Reading:
Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, no. 13
Analog Science Fiction & Fact, July/August 2003
