Those crazy petrol prices

Or gas prices, I should say ;) Today I noticed premium here in the northwest Illinois suburbs is edging up to $4.50 per gallon, and lucky me, that's probably what I'll be paying on the next fill-up. Our supercharged Grand Prix only drinks the high octane stuff unfortunately, which wasn't such a big deal when it was still cheap, but is now becoming a tad annoying. Still, it's cheaper than the prices they're presently paying Down Under (equivalent to around $5.50 / gallon for regular, last I checked) and elsewhere. Note to GM: a hybrid G8, pretty please? ;)

Back in 2005 I was shocked we'd passed the $3 / gallon mark. Now that $5 / gallon isn't too far off (and I'm sure we'll get there shortly), any gas price starting with a 3 sounds like a bargain. It'll be interesting to see whether what we're experiencing is a short-term bubble driven by speculation and panic, or if we really are on the steep downward end of the Peak Oil curve. From where we are right now it doesn't look like the prices will be dropping anytime soon!

And on another note, has it really been over 2 months since my last post here? Maybe I should tap out a summary post over the Memorial Day long weekend? If, that is, I can find the time between veggie plantings and other gardening madness....
