2013-02-18 2:41 PM Daily Photo Shoot - Day 18 Do you like surprises?
Good. My surprise today is that for the Daily Photo Shoot for Monday, 18 February 2013, there is no photo. (There really is... it got put in late...) I'm in a phunk -- a photo phunk. Actually I did snap a few shots earlier that involved dogs napping on a sofa, but woo-hoo? Is that exciting or what? So I figured I'd take a day off from this daily photo shoot thing. I might even take a week off from it. Or the rest of the month off. I may never do it again as I'm truly sick of doing it. I guess this cinches the theory that I was never meant to be a professional photographer. The classic movie of today was the 1961 version of MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY with Marlo Brando and Trevor Howard along with all those scantily clad native gals they met up with in the South Seas, one of whom stole Marlon's heart during the making of that film. Paul and I had a nice little chat about the movie being based on a real life event, which I never knew. He says there were three books, Mutiny on the Bounty, Men Against the Sea, & Pitcairn's Island. I didn't know all that either. Paul is a wealth of information sometimes. No matter what old movie I happen to be watching in here, he will stroll by the TV, stop and stare with a crunched-up look on his face and he'll come out with the name of it and the star(s). I don't know how he does that. These are movies I'd never even heard of before. He has usually "read the book" to start with. So... no photos. (again, not true...) I'm almost tempted to put one in since I did go to the trouble of taking a couple earlier. But I'd have to put my laptop down and run upstairs and upload it to flickr and yada-yada-yada... ok...be right back. I call this one - THE PAWS THAT REFRESHES I always wanted to get a good close-up picture of dog paws. This is the best I've done yet. But it's not great. Funny how they have the whole sofa to pick from... Em will get up first and curl up in a ball at the far (right) end and then Kip will join her and, rather than spreading out his larger-than-Emily body on the other half of the sofa, he will crunch up next to her, lying on top of her lower half most times, and there they will nap happily and snoozily. Silly dogs. OK. I've done a photo or two or three for yet another day in a row. Paul is up on his bed reading this afternoon after painting lobster buoys in the basement all morning. When I went up there just now to upload the photos from my camera, I poked my head in to see him sitting/lying on his bed just staring out the windows. I asked him what he was doing, and he told me he was just staring out the windows, thinking. There's nothing like a good think, especially on Presidents' Day. Oh, by the way, Happy Presidents' Day to you, one and all. Did anyone go out and buy a bargain motor vehicle of any sort today? Take advantage of the bargain basement prices they offer on this particular day of the year? The only Presidents' Day I remember with any lucidity was back in 1978. On the Monday, my then-boyfriend, Steve, and I went out for the day with his nephew and his girlfriend, to a Maytag Washer and Dryer Convention. Can you stand it? You see, my boyfriend (first hubby and I had split in 1976) owned a laundromat, and he was always needing to buy washers and dryers, so he wanted to check out the bargains being on offer on that particular Presidents' Day Sale. This was on the other side of Boston and we made a day of it. We ended up eating out at a Chinese restaurant and got home late-ish, around 6 or 7 p.m. As soon as I walked in the door of my 2-room apartment, my phone was ringing off the hook, and I rushed in and got my coat off and answered it before it stopped ringing. It was the voice of my brother on the other end of the line, saying in a rather cold and unfriendly voice, "Beck, your Papa's dead!" Just like that. Suddenly and with no warning, no soft consoling voice, nothing. Just those stone cold words. That was only days or was it a week or two? after the Blizzard of '78 here, and Daddy had died suddenly in the back yard trying to shovel mounds of snow off the bulkhead that went down into the basement. He was still warm lying in the snow when my Mother and Sister came home and found him there; they had, themselves, been out shopping for bargains that day, as well. So that's the one Presidents' Day I will remember always, it stands out from all the others which I don't remember at all. Bex & Daddy on Wedding Day #1 - 1970 It was February 20th, 1978, in two days it will have been 35 years ago. Wow. I miss him, too. He went way before I got to learn enough about his life because I was too young and self-centered then to know that I should pump my parents for all their details early and not wait because they always go too soon, whenever it is. Sorry this turned into a gloomy entry... Daddy would have loved my Kip and Em. His pet of choice was the CAT but he loved DOGS, as well. Daddy & Bex in Marblehead, 1972 Cheers, Bex & The Fuzzies
