I'm back.

My modem broke. My internet flickered on and off for several days and it was driving me nuts. I thought it was the snow and bad weather/wind, etc., but then I turned my modem off, for a rest, and when I turned it back on, I got nothing but a red light... never would it work again.

As I'm not tech savvy, I freaked.

I resorted to calling in the dreaded veriz0n on the phone and that conversation went on for over an hour. I spoke with "Oscar" and when I asked him if that was his real name, he said "yes" but I still don't believe him.

He said they would send me a new modem (a newer version that has the wireless router included in it) and that all I had to do was just plug in the plugs like I had before and it would start right up. Just like before.

Yeah right.

Not.

I went thru the depths of despair here for 3 days. Waiting for my modem to show up. It must have been delivered here last night and was on the back porch this a.m. I went right up and did just what "Oscar" told me to do.

Of course, it did not work. I have computer (older) and laptop (newer-ish) and neither worked. I had no idea what to do.

I asked Paul (in my state of tearing out my hair and not having any coffee in me yet) to go over and ask neighbor Peggy if she knew how to do it and please bring her back over here, so she said she'd be over in a bit. Then other neighbor, Bob, walked his dogs by and Paul suggested that since Bob is a highly skilled engineer, maybe he'd know how it's done. He nabbed him and asked and Bob came over.

It took Bob, upstairs with me sitting by, a total of 3 hours to do this small job. He just could not figure out why it wasn't working, and I kept telling him "nothing EVER works for me easily or the first time... EVER!" He knows now that is so true.

When we were ready to give it all up, I suggested we hook up the old router to the new modem (the new modem has a wireless router inside it - the new feature) and when we did that little thing, everything worked.

(And to Bob, I am forever grateful to you for your help, I just wish you liked lobsters so we could repay you!!!!)

I still can't believe I'm really back in the land of the living and online again. I am totally addicted to the internet, and I will admit that to anyone who asks now. I had a nervous breakdown during these last 3 days and poor Paul was a rock beside me... helping but not knowing what to do. He is not into anything electronic and can't even watch our HD TV without me pressing all the buttons... So all he could do was support me, climb under my desk, following lines here and there, plug in things, unplug things, it's all been horrible... before Bob came here. I really tried to do it all by myself but it would not happen.

Now it's hooked up and apparently working! I have so much email to catch up on but I'm working my way through it now. Journals to read, emails to write, I feel I've been living in a horrible underground world of gremlins and nastiness of life without the internet.

So thanks to Sandy from Iowa for notifying you in my last entry about all of this, and I hope this modem is a "Forever" modem (see Maggie Turner's recent post) because if this one ever dies, I am giving up the ghost of this life for sure.
