2014-07-31 9:35 AM A Tale of Two Prices & a Birthday Wish Last night Paul did our weekly food shopping. As you may know, we cannot shop at our beloved Market Basket because the whole drama of what's going on there has not been resolved yet. So we, their faithful customers, are having to shop elsewhere for our groceries. There is a Stop & Shop only up the street from us so that is where we go now.
I don't, as a rule, save my sales slips from stores, so, unfortunately, I don't have old ones to compare with these I am getting from Stop & Shop. But I thought I'd just look on last night's slip and see if I could find any comparison prices with those of the same item from Market Basket. I found only one I could show you, and here it is. Pure Vanilla Extract - McCormack's: Showing the Market Basket sticker price: I was running low on vanilla, which I use quite a bit since I started making Paul's homemade cookies as well as ice cream every week. The last time I bought vanilla was from Market Basket and, as you can see, the price was $8.99 for this large 16 oz. bottle. Here, you can see the difference between the Market Basket 16 oz. size and the tiny little 2 oz size Paul got from Stop & Shop last night. The price for the Market Basket vanilla was $8.99 for 16 oz. The price for the Stop & Shop vanilla was $7.89 for 2 oz. Now where would YOU rather shop if you had the choice? I wish I had more to compare and show you but I don't. I only have that one item that still had the price sticker from Market Basket on it, and I don't keep my receipts from past purchases. But suffice it to say that this is a perfect example of why we love MB and why we will bite the bullet and dig into our food budget pockets and shop elsewhere for our food - until Market Basket is returned to it's former CEO, Arthur T. DeMoulas. If that never happens, and the Board of Directors and current CEO, Arthur S. DeMoulas, do not do the right thing and continue in their efforts to win this fight at all costs, including firing any employee next Monday who does not report in for work, well, then, we are going to have to do some serious food-store-searching and I may even have to resort to clipping coupons! (Oh no!) I hate clipping coupons. I used to do it occasionally when I did the shopping myself, back in the physically-fit days of me, but I know that is not something that Paul will embrace. It's hard enough for him to continually do the weekly food shopping as it is, just concentrating on the list of items I give him and trying his level best to get everything on that list. He was never a shopper and so this is all fairly new to him since I handed over the reigns of being the Food-Shopper-in-Chief for this household. We are hoping the headlines about Market Basket won't die down and that people don't forget about this problem. This is affecting so many people in the Massachusetts/New Hampshire/Maine areas where the 71 Market Basket stores are located... even down to the farmers whose main customer has been Market Basket and who are now having to sell their product at half the price, if they can sell it at all. All the vendors who are protesting this Market Basket take-over are suffering, as are we, their faithful customers. I just wish this would come to a good resolution, that the Board of Directors sees the light and consents to sell the remainder of the business back to Arthur T., and that the stores we love can get back to normal again. That is my wish. That's about it from here. The weather here has turned unbelievably lovely - sunny and almost cool - at the end of July! Unheard of. Today is my ex's birthday too, so I want to take this opportunity to just say a heartfelt to him today. Let's see, I think he'd be 67 today... yes. Wow. Sixty seven! Where did the years go? Here's a little shot of us taken 44 years ago... when Life was all ahead of us and the world was ours for the taking: Probably my favorite picture of Bill: Many Happy Returns of the Day, old friend. Bill receiving award recently. (Click on photos for story and HERE for more of his story.) And a good day to all of you, new and old friends here!
