Today is the day Emmalee, our beautiful 12 year old collie girl, will be joining Kip over that Rainbow Bridge - otherwise known as doggie heaven.

Em and Kip

She's been "failing" for a while now. She can't really see much anymore and can't hear us either. But her legs are so bad that she will just fall down while standing there doing nothing... and after last night, when Paul came down after hearing some noises from her, he found her stuck in a corner behind a chair, unable to get up again or do anything really. It's time.

She's been with us since 21 April 2006. Here is my blog entry on her first day at Crow Cottage.

So, around noon today Em will go with Paul to the new vet in Marblehead and be relieved of her worldly tribulations and pain and hopefully will join Kip in that netherland where all good dogs go after a loving life with their people.

I am also cancelling my birthday dinner tonight. Just can't do it.

I think I could turn and live with animals...
They are so placid and self-contained,
I stand and look at them sometimes half the day long.

They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied... not one is demented with the mania of owning things,
Not one kneels to another nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or industrious over the whole earth.

~ [Walt Whitman, from "Leaves of Grass, No. 32"] ~
