Brainsalad The frightening consequences of electroshock therapy I'm a middle aged government attorney living in a rural section of the northeast U.S. I'm unmarried and come from a very large family. When not preoccupied with family and my job, I read enormous amounts, toy with evolutionary theory, and scratch various parts on my body. This journal is filled with an enormous number of half-truths and outright lies, including this sentence. |

2007-05-18 4:00 AM Attorney General is the most shit on job in any administration. When was the last time we had an attorney general who didn't take an enormous amount of flak? You have to go back 16 years to William Barr. Since then we've had Janet Reno, John Ashcroft, and Alberto Gonzalez, each of whom has been the whipping boy (or girl) of the opposing political party.
Although the ethics of firing of some attorneys in his office may be in question, it looks like Alberto Gonzalez was acting within the scope of the law. With respect to those firings, Congress really can't do anything to get rid of him. In my mind, there is more of a question about the truth of Gonzales' testimony before the Senate, and that is really the only thing that would force Bush to remove him. I think if there any charges to be brought on that issue, they would have come out by now. Even though Gonzalez is unpopular, I think Bush is probably doing the right thing politically by keeping him on. Although Gonzalez will remain unpopular until the end of Bush's term, the controversy will likely have died down in the news by the end of the year. If Gonzalez resigns though, there is a whole new nomination process to deal with. This would keep the issues in the spotlight for at least another six months. Also, I think if Gonzalez stays the course, it will be seen as a Bush victory, while having him resign will be conceding defeat, and an implicit acknowledgment that something was done wrong.
