I like my kids to ask questions. I also like them to try to work out their own answer... make them think, you know?
But there's an issue right now in our house which is driving me insane. It's the little matter of musical 'genre'. It's something which I just don't understand. In fact...'No!' It's something I just don't care to understand. Even my anally organised iPod will attest to the fact that I don't care. There are 'gaps' in the track information *gasp* I use two categories for my music: 1/ I like it. 2/ I don't like it. Done. So why do my kids (and I'm talking 'little' kids, remember) need to know about genre? ___________________ "Is this punk Mum?" "No that's not Punk" "Ahhh then it must be Pop Punk" *confused look* "But...Do you like it?...Why does it matter what it is?" "It's COOL to like punk" ...And that's the point where I bite my tongue and realise that they are too young to understand irony... ____________________ We've talked, a little bit, about "punk" being a concept not just a sound. About life and disillusionment in the late 70s. We've played them 'Anarchy in the UK'. They laughed. "That's not punk!!....and by the way did you know that Jailhouse Rock is not 'Rock'n'Roll'?" "Okaaaaay...*deep sigh and eye roll*...but do you like it?" I officially give up. Read/Post Comments (4) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
