2005-12-05 3:48 PM The Surgery That Wasn't A. and W. are napping after a day filled with ups and downs. (W. let me nap after we got home - he's so great!) We got up at 4'ish this morning and headed out the door a little after 5 am. I had called the doctor's office yesterday because A. was snotty and congested and I was worried that the surgery wouldn't happen, but they told us to come anyway, so we did.
A. was a bit wired but fell asleep again on the way to metropolitan city outpatient surgery center, and was actually in a good mood when we got there. At about 6:55 am they took us back and did his vitals and such, and A. began realizing that something was up and freaked out when we put the little gown on him. (Aside, he's now 35 inches tall and 38 lbs and he's 20 months old. The anesthesiologist kept asking us his weight like she couldn't believe it!) They gave him happy juice containing versed and tylenol, and because of his gunky nose they said they'd have to use an IV for anesthesia just to make sure there were no breathing complications with mucous getting in his throat. Thanks, much more information than I wanted, but I'm glad they knew what they were doing. He finally became loopy and the nurse (struggled) to carry him back, but I was grateful that she was holding him in his blanky that Grammy Meg made for him. We were led outside to the waiting room to....well, you know, wait. Rabbi A (as W. called her, our favorite Rabbi)my siamese twin (we say we were separated by Jesus) called and was on her way with breakfast tacos. We were reading back issues of "Texas Monthly" (look for another blog on neo-conservatives!!! Yikes!!!) After about 30 minutes, the Dr. came out and shared with us that they had been back there trying to get an IV started in A., but to no avail. He tried. The nurse tried. The anesthesiologist tried. He tried again. A. was under the breathing mask anesthesia, so he didn't feel it until he woke up, and the doctor said, "He's a bit upset." (Yeah, that was an understatement.) He has all these little bruises on his hands and feet. They did get a culture of the stuff in his nose that the doc said, "Was like glue." We'll get that info. back on Thursday, give him some other antibiotic, then try this whole thing again in two weeks. A. is going to freak out when we pull up next time. I was telling W. that this is a mixed blessing for me. First, I'm thankful that we are now working with an ENT that knows what he's doing and can give A. the care he needs. However, I also feel like an idiot - What do you mean that most other kids don't have snot the consistency of glue from December until March? I thought this was just a general kid thing. So, on another level, we are in the process of healing. A. bounced back after a nap in the car on the way home, and has been bouncing off the walls ever since! He's going back to school tomorrow :-) Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
