A comment left by Princess of Everything on reverendmother's blog got me to remembering...

About three years ago, when I was just about to graduate seminary,a friend of mine had a "girls only" party to celebrate her 50th birthday. She instructed us to bring "sparkly things" and "girly stuff". Since all my sparkly things were being used by my then-12-year-old Wonder Girl, I took my footbath-Jacuzzi-thingy and my OPI "I'm Not Really A Waitress".

While we laughed, dished, played several rousing rounds of "Would you Date This Theologian?" and admired the birthday girl's tiara, I gave each of the other women there a pedicure--complete with the color we later referred to as Red Tent Red.

It was my goodbye gift to them, as the lone senior in attendance, for I was graduating in about a week, and I wanted a chance to let each of them know what they had meant to me on the journey. Some of the women had never had pedicures before, some were bashful about having someone else touch their feet, and some were hilariously ticklish! There were a few tears shed that afternoon in Diana's little apartment, but there was much laughter. The footwashing aspect of it felt downright biblical.

About a week later, as I was walking across the platform to receive my hard-earned diploma, there was a group of women standing just at the end of the walkway with their arms around each other waving red flowers at me ,and each waving one foot in an opentoed shoe showing off crimson toenails. As I hugged them, they took off my mortar board, and put a tiara of my very own on my head.

I wore it for the rest of the day.
