Staff:

Stacy Taylor: Stacy developed and taught three successful writing courses in 2002 for Universal Class. She won two instructor awards for the duration of her position and was ranked number forty-six out of over 4000 instructors. An accomplished writer herself, she has been published extensively online and has won several writing contests. Today she writes when she has time and co-edits, co-publishes two online publications: Chick Flicks Ezine, and HeavyGlow: a journal of flash fiction. Stacy can frequently be found sipping mocha breves from the local espresso stand and fighting her craving for Thai food.

Laurie O'Hare: A slightly tarnished Southern Bell, Laurie was a Junior Editor for Abstracts magazine. When the publication folded, she took a position as an Assistant Editor for 3F Publications, where she assisted in selecting fiction for their signature anthology series. During her time with 3F, she edited Steven Weidel's novel, Shara, which is currently available for purchase at Scrybe Press. Laurie took second place in the 2003 24-hour short story contest at Writer's Weekly, and she won third place in the 2004 Southern Halloween Short Story Contest at Lost in the Dark. Currently, she continues to sharpen her writing and editing skills, and co-edits, co-publishes Chick Flicks Ezine, and HeavyGlow: a journal of flash fiction.

Call for submissions

Current submission period: December 15, 2004 through January 15, 2005. Notifications will be mailed on or before January 20, 2005 and the release date for issue 3 is February 15, 2005.

The editors of Chick Flicks are currently reading submissions for issue number three. Full details available here!

With two issues under our belt, Laurie and I think we're starting to get the hang of this publishing stuff. We're excited about issue number three; it's the first time we'll be able to pay for some of the fabulous writing that comes our way. We can only grow from here.

We tentatively have a feature writer in place already--a talented young lady who helped to make issue 2 a great success (I won't spoil the surprise). Today was our first winter season "open day" and we have received three pieces already with more soon to come. Stay tuned for updates, progress, and further details.

Please visit our site for full guidelines, but as this is our first entry, I'll post them here as well:)

Summary:

Chick Flicks, an ezine that fills the void in publishing. We're looking for stories and essays that are moody, dark, real, gritty. Stories about internal conflict juxtaposed against external demands, about real life people coming to terms--good or bad--with themselves and their choices. You don't have to be a woman to submit to Chick Flicks, nor does your main character need to be a woman. We're looking for pieces with less-spoken, but common universal truths. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us hurt in the deepest, darkest parts of our souls. But most of all, be honest, raw, real.

Details:

Fiction:

2000 words or less. Some exceptions may be made, but send a query letter first for stories over the limit. We're not genre specific, just whatever moves us.

Essays or Nonfiction:

Personal essays, memoir, creative nonfiction. Word limit is 2000. Again, longer works may be considered with query letter first.

Rights:

We seek only one-time publishing rights and reserve the right for future inclusion in our e-book anthology publication. All rights revert back to the author.

We have no themes, but holiday themed submissions should fall in the appropriate time slots. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas for the October 15 issue, etc.

No simultaneous or multiple submissions. A writer may submit one fiction and one nonfiction piece during a single reading period, but please wait for a reply before submitting any other works. Single space, but double space between paragraphs. No indents or tabs. Paste into the body of a plain text email and send to
chickflicksezine@yahoo.com
(We will be switching to attachments only beginning with issue 4!)

In the subject of the email, put Fiction or Nonfiction Submission: Title. In the body of the email include, your name, email address, title, and a 100 word, third person bio.

Chick Flicks is a paying market. We pay ten American dollars upon publication for the top two stories of each issue--editor's choice. You must have a PayPal account to receive payment. Additionally, each accepted author is eligible to be our Feature Author in a future issue. Feature authors will receive a Chick Flicks t-shirt or a journal from our store as well as an extended bio, with links and interview, to promote their work. Eventually, we hope to gather the best of each issue and publish an e-book, for which authors would receive some form of compensation.

Chick Flicks: not for women only.
