My first bicycle race was: Sanctioned by the United States Cycling Foundation (I had to buy a license). An event in the Bluegrass State Games (I got a t-shirt). Not easy (I got lapped). And my first bicycle race was: At the Coldstream Research Campus (named after the farm that it displaced, like a lot of the campuses, subdivisions and shopping “centres” in Lexington). A loop that ended with a left turn into a headwind at the top of a hill (insult+injury, you’re familiar with the expression). Kinda fun despite that (and despite the fact that I got lapped again). In my first bicycle race, I: Maintained the highest average speed I ever have over the course of a single ride. Didn’t win. Didn’t finish last. Did finish.
