Mood:
So-So

[Er, movie spoilers below, I guess. You have been warned.]

So,

Saw Jet Li's "The One" this past afternoon. I liked it, but I can't help feeling that I would have liked it more if there'd been more story. I mean, the special effects were important; they basically showed you what Li's characters were capable of, but...somehow, I wasn't entirely pleased with them. I'm sure would have preferred they showed Li moving as a blur instead of always slowing down whenever he cranked on the super speed. The strength was handled well, though, and the fight scenes were great (except, as previously stated, would've preferred more blur and less slo-mo). I also would have preferred that we got to actually see one of the characters become "One," instead of capturing the evil Li ("Yulaw," according to IMDB) and sending the good Li (Gabriel) to an alternate dimension to start his life over. But...I guess that's for the sequal. 2.5 to 3 stars. Like TimeCop (which it resembles more than anything, IMO), I enjoyed it, I'd probably watch it whenever it came onto cable, but I probably wouldn't bother to own it. For the record, I liked "Kiss of the Dragon" better, but I think we got to see Li *act* more in this movie, so that was cool. Also, as I understand it, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was originally going to be cast in this movie; I can't even *imagine* that...

Anyway, later on we caught "Monsters, Inc."

However, before we get to that, we must briefly discuss the "Star Wars, Episode 2: Attack of the Clones" trailer. Looks very slick. Odds are, it should be much better than SW:tPM. Of course, I should really call it a teaser, 'cause that's what it felt like. All we got were [very cool] scenes and *no* sound other than Vader-esque breathing. Bastards. They know it doesn't matter. They could never make any trailers for it and it would still gross fifty zillion dollars.
Oh well.

So, then, "Monsters, Inc." Actually, before that was a little short called "For the Birds," which was really funny (and yes, cute). Then the move began. Very cool animation, as expected, and lots of emotional blackmail. I mean, hey, it's Disney, right? The monsters were cool and funny, the little kid was saccharine sweet enough to rot a dentist's mouth, and the plot was interesting (and even topical). I seemed to be one of the few people who'd actually read what the plot was, as I seemed to be chuckling less than everyone else at the "rolling blackouts expected" joke. All in all, pretty damn funny in all the right places and, of course, wholesome fun for the whole family. I rate it 3 out of 5 stars.

That's all for now.
