2002-07-30 3:02 PM Just a night in my veins Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: awake So, Monday night is a pretty standard one in my universe: Karaoke at the Liquid Kitty.
We do it, we been doin' it for a while. Barely missed a night, we have. It's a rare night; partly 'cause we're a larger crowd than usual, mainly 'cause I'm pretty decent throughout. I can't go through the repertoirs of my associates, because I don't really remember them all and really, if they'd like to recount them, they can. ('Cept for 2, hardly a non-journaler to be found; how sad is that?) As I said, however, I was good. Opened up with "Mysterious Ways" by U2 (off of my favourite album of theirs, Achtung Baby). Now if they could get "One" in the rotation, I'd be pleased as hell, since I dig doing that particular song, even if it is depressing as fuck. Those are the only two U2 songs I'll do onstage 'cause they're the only ones where I can even vaguely sound like Bono. Generally, I advise people against doing U2 in karaoke; more often than not, it's a train wreck. And lo, there were more than a few train wrecks to be had last night, a few even from our party. Still, when it comes to standing up in front of a group of strangers and blowing air past your diaphragm (if you're doing it right), courage is to be lauded. This is why we applaud, even if someone comes up and blows goats. Anyway, back to me. So, after U2, it's time for George Michael. I'd planned on doing "I Want Your Sex" (always a crowd pleaser), but bumped it back a space in favour of "Kissing a Fool", requested by Anya. That one surprised me, since I haven't done it since...shit, I can't even remember the last time. Not counting last night, I'd maybe done it once since the first time in high school in front of my choir class. Still, it came out good, even if I did let myself have a bit of fun with it. It's a rather sad song and after a while, I couldn't take myself seriously, especially considering the some of the odd gesturing I'm prone to when I get into singing. So, after that, of course, is "I Want Your Sex," which even got a couple of folks dancin' on the floor. That's always flattering, 'cause people rarely dance if you sound like shit, even if they like the song (though it has been known to happen...). Somewhere in between there were a few interesting bits. Tried to save The Girl on "Learn to Fly", with mixed results. Choi brought us some Beatles early on, and Dennis Quaid hit us with a nice bit of song that I didn't quite recognize, but sounded vaguely familiar. Yeah, Dennis Quaid was in the house last night. We were all too cool to actually speak to him or anything, 'cause that's how it's done out here. 'Sides, he was surrounded by a bunch of girls, none of whom appeared to be any older than California's required drinking age. One or two didn't look old enough to legally smoke; he made out with the blonde. Pretty good for a guy who's pushing fifty, I'd say. I may start looking to see where his band plays, just for the hell of it... I have, of course, seen other celebrities (see previous entry), but I still think it's kind of cool. Anyway...so that about covers it. I have phone calls to make... Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
