Drink water. Eat: The stew stains on his jammies are my fault as are the pieces of rice and the cookie crumbs. I do pretty well eating with my hands; it's trying to keep the salad on the fork and the dressing on the salad that runs me into trouble. Some how I never managed to eat at the table with Rose. I always felt banished to the sofa and isolated. I don't know if it's the new improved boppy, David's focus, or my skills, but the whole family can now eat together. Edit Emily's family history (for pay!) Gaze in David's eyes. Gently caress David's full warm head. Grin at him. Help Rose put the shoe on her doll and then tie the shoe. One handed, pretty impressive. Hold the yellow construction paper in the hole punch, so Rose can punch it. Hunch over. Kegels. Listen to John reading to Rose. Listen to John telling Rose stories. Listen to NPR. Manipulate purple sticky sticks into a dog, a very impressionistic dog, actually not much of a dog unless you're looking really hard or are a forgiving three year old. Neck retractions. Pick at the disgusting crud on David's head, the dry skin on his face, the goopy schmutz behind his ear. Plan a book I want to write, someday. Plan a letter of recommendation that's due this week. Plan a workshop I'm going to give at the end of the month. Pump: David on one side, the pump on the other. Sometimes his legs kick out, knocking against the bottle or tugging at the cord, and I worry he thinks I'm stealing from him. Quarrel with Rose. Read Entertainment Weekly, decadent junk I pilfer from my tenant's mail, well she did give permission. Read poetry: Philip Levine, Paul Celan, Sandra McPherson. Roethke is waiting at the library. Read to Rose: Pippi Longstalking, Ladybug, Wind in the Willows, Dora. . . Sleep. Snuggle with Rose and David. Her arms wrapped around his body. Her head leaning over to kiss him. My head leaning over to kiss her. Stare out the window at rain dripping off the eucalyptus tree. Talk on the phone to my sister, my mother, my friend from college who's home with her daughter, my sister again, my friend from high school, my friend from work, my sister again, another friend from college who's home with her daughter, John, my dad, my friend from college who lives in a different time zone, people who want me to give money, my brother-in-law wanting to know if my sister is there, my sister of course. Tell Rose her bedtime stories that would normally happen in her room with her on my lap, but somehow she does not object to hearing them in my office with her on the swivel chair, me on the rocking chair, and David on my lap. Watch "Law and Order" on the red couch with John as we so much like to do. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
