John came downstairs and told me this one.

The scene: The tail end of bedtime routine. The room is dark. John and Rose are lying on her bed. He is in the middle of singing "Stewball." No one has talked about fire fighters in recent memory.

Rose: I'm scared of being a fire fighter.

John: (probably something like, you don't have to be a fire fighter)

Rose: Do fire fighters get burned?

John: Sometimes. They try to be careful, but sometimes they get burned.

(Then a conversation about getting burned and being careful around fires.)

Rose: I'll just stay in the truck.

John: Or you could do the hose.

Rose: Do you get burned if you use the hose?

John: Probably not.

Rose: If I stand really far back…
