John took David to the toy store yesterday. Lion was sitting right there on the shelf. David took one look and went "Aak!"

John said, "Yes, honey, I know."

"Aak!" pointing.

"We're just going to. . ."

"Aak aak aak!" arm outstretched, his whole body catapulting forward.

"Ok, we'll get it now." And lion was in his arms snuggled against his cheek.

Senior year of college I was standing in the music hall. It was a Saturday. I remember a moon through the tall windows. I turned and saw John. He had taken the train from Boston, asked my housemates where to find me, and walked through the door. I had no idea he was coming.

I know exactly how David felt.
