We've been talking about it for months. When the change comes, daisies will burst through the sidewalk, rainbows will hover over our house. When the change comes, all interactions with my children and partner will be patient, mature, why, in fact, cheerful, no joyous.

When the change comes, David will sleep until 6:15. And so will I.

First we blamed it on his cold, then the teething, and now we have no more excuses. David still wakes at 5:00. He moved himself forward? He moved himself back? I'm not following the logic; I just know it's too early for my sanity.

We tried moving his bedtime later—more time on duty, less sleep for him. We tried John bouncing and singing to him in the pre-dawn—I managed a couple quick strange dreams in between the sounds of fussing, but we gave it up at 5:30.

We know the answer: I have to get to bed earlier, get to sleep earlier, and take more naps. I was so counting on those rainbows.
