221/2 months old She peered at Mary's bridge hand and Mary said, "What shall I bid, Sue?" "Pass," said Sue. Then at Peg's "What shall I bid?" "No bid," said Sue. November. She brought to the breakfast table a chess man. "What's dat?" "A king," said Ros. "Can we have a little butter for de woyal slice of bwead?" [not yet three] Always seeking to learn by experience, she found that tact worked better than intransigence. Alice found her turning on the water in the bathroom, and Sue said, "I can do it myself. You go in the livingwoom and smoke a cigawette." [three] In the car she liked to stand close to Alice on the front seat and enjoy the view through the windshield. Driving one day in May she burst out, like Walt Whitman: "I see de pink I see de flowers, I see de ducks in de water I see de side walks, I see de twolley cahs. I'm talking! Dis is language! I want de best words!" Read/Post Comments (2) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
